Is your bench cushion filled with foam rubber? If it is, then this article will be a great help for you. Today, we will share some tips to help you clean your foam rubber cushion, which is known to harbor allergens like mildew, mold, and dust. As bench cushion covers or upholstery is not a barrier to microscopic debris, moisture, or spores, it’s important to clean either bench cushion indoor or outdoor properly as washing is forbidden for this cushion type.
Strip the removable coverings and casings from bench cushion, and then weigh it on a scale. Make not of the weight when your cushion dries. Then fill a small wading pool or tub halfway with cool water. Mix the water with 1/4 cup of mild detergent. Place the cushion, lay it flat. Don’t overlap your cushion. If you have a lot of cushions to clean, remember you may need to clean yours a couple at a time.
Lean over the bench cushion, press it down repeatedly. You can also do this by gently trample on your cushion, stepping into the tub or pool with bare feet first. This is an old way but the purpose is all the same: Water absorbed into the cushion can help squirting out the dirt. When you’re done, drain the pool or tub, refill with clean water. Add 1/4 cup of white vinegar the remove the detergent. Again, stomp on or squeeze the cushion. Let the water draining out. If the water is still dirty, repeat the squishing step again as necessary until the water rinses clear.
Lay the cushion on a flat surface. A wire rack will suffice for maximum air circulation. Place your bench cushion in a cool and dry area, away from direct sunlight. Sunlight and heat are the nemesis of foam rubber, which can lead to disintegration and break the foam down. Squeeze out excess moisture by putting something heavy on top of your cushions. Leave it for a day, remove the weight the next day and let your cushion sit out until it air dries.
Weight your bench cushion every day. When it returns to its original weight, it means the cushion has been dry thoroughly. Replace the cushion covers, and the put your cushion back in place. The same cleaning steps also apply for any foam rubber cushion size. If you have small cushions, you can use dryer but be sure it is only in a cool air setting.
